eBay Confront Tiffany & Co In Court
Tuesday, 22 July 2008
Are you still shopping on eBay? If you’re still one of the loyal shoppers in this site, then you’ll be glad to know that eBay just kicked Tiffany’s ass in court!
Way back in 2004, Tiffany & Co., one of the leading jewelry manufacturers in the US, sued eBay. Tiffany claimed that the items listed on sale on online auction company was mostly fakes.
The judge rules in favor of eBay, saying that they did not even have to preemptively take down the suspicious listings made for Tiffany jewelry.
Says Wendy Seltzer of the Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society: “If eBay had to preemptively examine the trademark status of every item that were posted is it genuine, is it counterfeit it would be much more expensive to put a listing on eBay because it would be much more expensive for eBay to process and host this listing.”
I think that counterfeiting of branded goods is definitely an issue that we need to be more vigilant about.
Just imagine the pride that you’re supposed to feel when you successfully bid for a thousand-dollar designer bag on eBay, only to discover that it’s a knockoff! That would really suck!
